The UK government’s Employment Rights Bill introduces the most significant changes to Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) in decades. The reforms will impact organisation’s need to control absence to mitigate the additional direct costs estimated to be up to £0.5 million for a 5,000-employee company.
How SSP Changes Affect You
Organisations that offer SSP for a significant portion of its employees will need to absorb additional costs generated by:
- The removal of the three-day ‘waiting period’ so that SSP payments begin from day one of absence rather than day four
- Increase in short-term absence rates (1 – 3 days) by up to 35% seen in companies that have already removed the ‘waiting period’ as part of their policy
- All workers having the right to claim SSP by the removal of the lower earnings limit and including employees within ‘probation periods’
Organisations across all private and public sectors, must prepare for this complex change and consider proven approaches to mitigate the greater administrative and financial exposure.
